Environment and Sustainable Development

Project is in planning phase

An initial assessment was carried out in late 2002 to gather background information on the potential of developing a UNV supported project in the area of eco-tourism and coastal resource management in Indonesia. UNV’s role lies in its’ strength to build capacity at the local community level, with civil society organizations, and with local government in the area of Natural Resource Management.

UNV could play an important role in the promotion of Voluntary action to protect the environment and promote people’s participation in the local decision making processes. Furthermore, the approach of combining eco-tourism and coastal resources management will address an important yet rather un-explored area of involvement.

In September 2003, 2 online volunteers completed research paper on sustainable shrimp farming. A community-based coastal resources management specialist (NUNV) will be hired soon, together with a team of 1 international and 1 national consultants who will be hired by UNDP to further develop the project.
