Joint Programmes in NTT

UNV will play a major part in a new initiative in Indonesia, working alongside no less than nine UN partners in the fight against poverty.

The initiative was developed in close cooperation between government officials at the district, provincial and central government level and the UN.  The “Improving sustainable livelihoods” aspect of the project will entail UNV working directly alongside UNDP, WFP, the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United National Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Inductrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Other partners within the overall East Nusa Tenggara programme are UNICEF, the United National Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), The United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO)

The programme aims to support the Belu district’s development plan by addressing primary school participation, healthy nutrition, maternal mortality, small-scale infrastructure, agricultural production and processing, local economic development, poverty alleviation, governance and crisis prevention. Belu was chosen due to the high incidence of poverty in the district and its challenges advancing the Millennium Development Goals.

Experience with the initiative in Belu may be used in other districts in the future to adopt a similar joint approach among multiple UN agencies. The United Nations has identified several regions, among them NTT, Aceh and Papua, in which planning for joint programs is under way with UNV partcipitation.
