International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2007

International Volunteer Day was celebrated in Papua, Banda Aceh and Jakarta. In Papua there has been a large participation of local communities, students from schools and district government staff, and also local civil society organization representatives, community-based groups, church-based organizations and youth groups. Activities in Banda Aceh supported an orphanage for tsunami victims. In Jakarta, UNV, together with partner volunteer organizations, the Ministry of Manpower and UNDP, shared ideas, common goals and experiences, and jointly volunteered by providing direct support to a community in a very poor area of the city. This marked the commitment to volunteerism and encouraged volunteer action. Some 1,000 people from the identified community have received medical support and advice, and participated in a discussion on HIV/AIDS, reproductive health and drugs abuse.
