Celebrating achievements in Aceh and Nias

UNDP Indonesia is preparing to participate in the fourth and final Coordination Forum for Aceh and Nias (CFAN) Exhibition in Jakarta, 13-14 February 2009.

CFAN – an annual forum organized by the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency for Aceh and Nias (BRR) – celebrates achievements and shares lessons learned with all those involved in the reconstruction of Aceh and Nias. It features seminars; art exhibitions; music and dance performances; documentary screenings; children’s programmes and workshops. The theme of this year’s CFAN is A Celebration of Humanity.

UNDP Indonesia will host a seminar titled The Role of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Recovery of Aceh and Nias. The seminar will look at how CSOs see their roles changing and expanding from their traditional advocacy roles pre-disaster, to a potential partner to the local government during post-disaster recovery. Discussions will also focus on lessons learned, and views on the future of CSOs' roles in Aceh and Nias.

Two documentaries produced by UNDP Indonesia will also be screened during CFAN. Ketahanan (Resilience) traces the path of recovery through the voices of tsunami survivors in Banda Aceh, and features compelling tales of survival. Solidaritas (Solidarity) focuses on UNDP’s work on Nias island in Sumatra, following the large earthquake that struck the island in March 2005.

UNDP Indonesia will also exhibit at CFAN, alongside all UN agencies working in Aceh and Nias (exhibition stand number ML 48 – 55).

This year’s CFAN is particularly significant, as BRR will complete its four-year mandate in April. The process of reconstruction in Aceh and Nias will be continued by the provincial governments of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam and North Sumatra. UNDP Indonesia will continue to work in both regions with programmes including Tsunami Recovery Waste Management, Aceh Government Transformation Programme and Strengthening Sustainable Peace and Development in Aceh.
