March 2008

The UNDP Livelihoods programme began in January 2005. It is a strong and successful component of the UNDP Emergency Response and Transitional Recovery (ERTR) Livelihoods programme. Its main aim is to restore the livelihoods and pre-tsunami income levels of earthquake and tsunami-affected people in Aceh and Nias. The purpose of the research reported in this document was to determine the impact of the UNDP Livelihoods programme on beneficiaries’ standard of living in Aceh and Nias.

UNDP EMERGENCY RESPONSE AND TRANSITIONAL RECOVERY (ERTR) LIVELIHOODS PROGRAMME
24 Month Report, January 2006 - December 2006

UNDP's livelihood recovery strategy focuses on the poor and vulnerable in tsunami-affected communities who need to return to their pre-tsunami income levels to sustain themselves. Livelihood recovery activities include providing support for the recovery of small enterprises and trade, fisheries, aquaculture, agriculture and livestock. They also include giving community grants, recovering sporting activities, providing vocational training, and developing environment and childcare centres.

TSUNAMI RECOVERY WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME
6 Monthly Progress Report, May 2006 - December 2006

The main aim of the TRWMP is to build capacity in government and create immediate employment and longer-term livelihoods in waste management, whilst benefiting the environment through collection, recovery and recycling of waste materials for use in rehabilitation and reconstruction, and through safe disposal of residual wastes. The TRWMP addresses the overall environmental impact of the tsunami and aims to prevent future negative environmental impacts from improper waste handling and disposal.

Building Blocks for Sustainable Recovery
Second Annual Report of the Aceh/Nias Emergency Response and Transitional Recovery (ERTR) Programme 2005-2006
Over the course of UNDP's response during the past two years, the Emergency Response and Transitional Recovery (ERTR) programme has expanded to address a range of complementary recovery priorities, including notably an expanded focus on waste management, rehabilitation of port infrastructure, as well as support to United Nations (UN) Joint Programming.

ACCELERATING RECOVERY - Technical Support for BRR
First Progress Report to the Multi Donor Fund 2006
The Multi-Donor Fund for Aceh and Nias has become one of the most important strategic assets available to the Agency for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (BRR). This facility has assisted BRR to implement effectively its mandate of planning, coordinating, and monitoring the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the tsunami and earthquake affected areas of Aceh and North Sumatra. It has supported BRR to enhance its operational and technical capacity, strengthening its efficiency, participation and transparency with stakeholders, and ultimately its ability to deliver the relief and recovery required by the people of Aceh and North Sumatra.
