Government of Indonesia Launches strategic projects to complete the post-tsunami reconstruction in Nias
The Government of Indonesia launches three strategic projects in Nias Islands as part of its Nias Continuation of Post-tsunami Reconstruction to 2012 Programme today. The three projects worth over USD 24 million, funded by Multi Donor Fund for Aceh and Nias (MDF) are implemented by UNDP, World Bank and ILO in collaboration with Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Disadvantaged Region.

Banda Aceh: From debris and rubble to environmental award
Four years after the tsunami, Kota Banda Aceh wins 2009 Adipura Award for being among the cleanest and greenest cities in Indonesia. The President of Indonesia, Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono presented the awards to the winners in the Presidential Palace last week. The Mayor of Banda Aceh, Ir Mawardy Nurdin M.Eng SC, thanked UNDP for its contribution in the post-tsunami reconstruction, particularly for its successful waste management project.

New report on 2004 tsunami recovery efforts reveals the need to involve local communities every step of the way
To better respond to natural disasters, governments should invest more in risk reduction for vulnerable communities and make sure to reflect gender concerns in the recovery process, says a report presented today at the United Nations. Involving local communities in the recovery process, according to "The Tsunami Legacy: Innovation, Breakthroughs and Change" report, is as instrumental as installing high-tech early warning systems. The report also highlights the need for governments to incorporate disaster risk reduction measures in national development plans.

Voter Education as You've Never Seen Before -- Get-out-the vote in Indonesia means reaching some unusual target groups
Getting out the vote is no easy feat in Indonesia. With more than 170 million eligible voters, half a million polling stations and five million poll workers, innovation in voter education is essential for the April 9 parliamentary elections. Even the most marginalized of sex workers, people with disabilities, first-time voters and elderly shut-ins are sought out in order to receive voter information. The aim is to ensure that voter education messages reach all corners of this massive archipelago.

The Spanish Government contributes funds through UNDP in support to Indonesia’s 2009 Elections and DPD RI
The Government of Spain through the Spanish Agency for International Development (AECID) announced today a contribution through UNDP for the Multi Donor Programme – Support to Indonesia's Democratic Elections (Elections MDP) and the Parliamentary Reform Initiative and DPD Empowerment – Support to the Indonesian House of Regional Representatives (PRIDE) at a ceremony hosted by Bappenas (National Development Planning Agency) in Jakarta. The ceremony was attended by H.E. Aurora Bernaldez Dicenta, Ambassador of Spain to Indonesia and El-Mostafa Benlamlih, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative to Indonesia.

The Government of Indonesia and UNDP launched TV PSAs to inform voters of 2009 general elections on the new voting system
The Government of Indonesia and UNDP, through the Multi-Donor Programme: Support to Indonesia's Democratic Elections (Elections MDP), launched the PSAs to inform voters on the new system to mark the ballot papers (ticking instead of punching a hole on the paper) as well as to increase public awareness to exercise their rights on the elections day. The PSA campaigns are now running in five major Indonesian TV stations until 8th of April, before the holding of legislative elections on 9 April 2009.

New Song on Volunteerism and Tsunami Recovery Released
In partnership with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, Acehnese musicians Mahrisal Rubi and Edy Erwinsyah released a song commemorating the second anniversary of the tsunami that hit several countries of South East Asia on 26 December 2004. Titled “Bersama Kita Bisa” (Together We Can Do It!), the song highlights the key role that volunteerism has played in the recovery of the affected regions in Indonesia, especially in Aceh Province.

UNDP Supports Rickshaw Project for Tsunami Victims
Tsunami victims are receiving assistance to restart their businesses and return to normal life. In Sigli, in the province of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, rickshaws are being handed over to small traders and porters. This project is supported by the United Nations Development Programme and is being implemented by Islamic Relief in partnership with the local NGO Maimun Centre. In consultation with the community, the beneficiaries were chosen among the most vulnerable families. The rickshaws are not a donation. The project is organized as a micro-credit system. Each recipient agrees to pay back its value in weekly installments. The money returns to the community fund, so that new rickshaws can be purchased and benefit more families. This way the local economy is boosted and the beneficiaries develop a sense of empowerment and responsibility towards the project.

UNDP Distributes Wind-Up Radios to Tsunami-Affected Communities
The United Nations Development Programme has distributed 35,000 wind-up radios to tsunami-affected communities in the Aceh province, including Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar, Pidie, Bireun, Aceh Utara, Aceh Timur, Meulaboh, Calang, Sabang, Pulo Aceh and Simeulue. Wind-up radios provide an essential means for the population to get access to information in remote areas. The radios can be powered by dynamo (wind-up), solar energy, battery and electricity. They are also equipped with siren and flashlight which are very useful in emergency situations in disaster-prone areas like Aceh.

Building boom in Aceh to reach $2 billion a year
One year after the tsunami, Aceh and Nias are on the brink of a construction boom which is showing a gigantic leap in construction spending from a normal $50 million to approximately $2 billion a year, according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This unprecedented jump in construction could result in many opportunities for the poorest in this tsunami-hit community, with the right training and enhanced local production of materials.

Controlled Demo to take down tallest tower in Banda Aceh – Debris to be used for rebuilding
The tallest non-religious building in Banda Aceh will be brought down in a controlled demolition beginning today. The 45-year old water tower heavily damaged by the tsunami, which stands like a local Tower of Pisa with a pie on top, is a hazard to people and buildings around it. The heavy concrete debris from this famous local landmark, which was damaged in the earthquake and tsunami nearly a year ago, will be scooped up and used to rebuild essential feeder roads, including one leading to the new Ulee Lhu port which opened earlier this month.

First Ferry Since Tsunami Moors at Ulee Lheu Port
The ferry from Sabang Island, Indonesia landed at Ulee Lhue port in Banda Aceh today for the first time since the tsunami, following an extensive rehabilitation programme by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Banda Aceh Transportation Agency which has returned the port to use.

UNDP Completes Ulee Lheu Port’s Access Road
The United Nations Development Programme is pleased to announce that the reconstruction of the key road to Ulee Lheu port in Banda Aceh, which was completely washed away by the tsunami, is now complete. The wave of December 26th had destroyed all land access to the port leaving the facilities isolated on an island in the harbor. As well as providing access for passengers, the new road is also vital because it means the materials and heavy equipment needed for reconstruction of the port buildings can now be driven to the site.

Tsunami Waste Management Programme
The destruction and damage caused by the tsunami has generated large volumes of solid waste. When not properly managed this waste can pose environmental hazards, serious dangers to public health and delay the process of recovery and rehabilitation. UNDP in close cooperation with the Indonesian government will start appropriate waste management and recycling initiatives for both the tsunami waste and municipal garbage in Banda Aceh.

The Clean-up Begins: Acehnese Hired to Clear Tsunami Rubble
Three hundred displaced and affected people by the tsunami in Indonesia’s Aceh province have been hired today by the Minister of Public Works with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to remove debris from the Indian Ocean Tsunami. This rubble removal mass-employment initiative aims to provide income to displaced people while helping them to begin rebuilding.
