The tsunami that hit Indonesia and other countries in December 2004 was a major natural disaster that prompted an unprecedented international relief effort. International organizations in partnership with local governments forged a successful partnership not only to help the survivors, but to set forth the essential conditions for sustainable development in the framework of a market economy.

UNDP’s booth to come third in Aceh cultural expo competition

During the devastating conflict in the 1950s, the Acehnese government successfully attempted to reunite its people by establishing the Aceh Cultural Fair in 1954. Since then there has been four Cultural Fairs, the latest being in August of 2009 in conjunction with the Aceh International Expo. The post-conflict and post-tsunami provincial government was eager to promote a new and exciting Aceh though this very rare event. The expo was aimed to promote both the local private and public sector institutions, and all organisations that are still working on the recovery of Aceh, to recognize their support, share experiences and results on rehabilitation and reconstruction as well as to promote development and unity in the area. UNDP Indonesia is preparing to participate in the fourth and final Coordination Forum for Aceh and Nias (CFAN) Exhibition in Jakarta, 13-14 February 2009.
CFAN – an annual forum organized by the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency for Aceh and Nias (BRR) – celebrates achievements and shares lessons learned with all those involved in the reconstruction of Aceh and Nias. Taking livelihoods skills to overseas market
A visit to Ibu Rubiah’s Banda Aceh home is a lively affair. Brightly coloured thread sits alongside sewing machines, and her floor is scattered with colourful crochet bags that she proudly produced by hand. Ibu Rubiah’s impressive talents have now been recognized, and through a UNDP Livelihoods programme her products can now also be found in the homes of overseas customers.

 

Wasting no time in helping the environment
Proudly carrying waste bags, and wearing gloves, masks and branded t-shirts, UNDP staff joined more than 250 people in Banda Aceh to promote a key event: World Environment Day.
