UNDP Crisis Prevention and Recovery Programme

A peaceful place to live and play
  • Peace Through Development
Indonesia’s transition to democracy and the decentralization of government authority to the regions is an ongoing process. However in some provinces in Eastern Indonesia this process has been marked by sporadic outbreaks of violent conflict. Three provinces in particular, North Maluku, Maluku, and Central Sulawesi have experienced major sectarian conflict since 1999. This has had a devastating impact on the well-being of the people, their economies and the development process. It has also challenged both national and regional governments to formulate effective responses. UNDP is supporting programmes in these provinces that aim to enhance government and civil society capacity in managing and reducing conflict.

  • Early Recovery Assistance for Jogjakarta and Central Java (ERA)
Early Recovery Assistance Programme for Yogyakarta and Central Java An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale hit Yogyakarta and Central Java Provinces in Indonesia on 27 May 2006. There were well over five thousand fatalities with approximately 600,000 homes damaged or destroyed. Economic losses largely relate to lost or damaged economic assets, including markets, household enterprises and shops, affecting mostly people working in the informal economy. UNDP is providing the National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS) with technical assistance. UNDP is also supporting early recovery efforts, with a mandate to ensure effective linkages of immediate responses to the earthquake disaster with medium-term recovery (rehabilitation and reconstruction) efforts.

  • The Emergency Response and Transitional Recovery (ERTR)
Programme commenced activities in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, January 2005. The early focus of the ERTR Programme was on responding to the emergency, mainly through immediate clean-up and humanitarian assistance. However, ERTR quickly moved to supporting an early transition to rehabilitation and recovery support. ERTR is designed to serve as a link between immediate short-term and longer-term recovery and development activities, in order to promote sustainable recovery from the crisis.

This project is providing initial support the recovery and reconciliation process, as well as carrying out assessments and planning for the design of a longer-term programme in Central Sulawesi in support of sustainable peace and development.
