Micro-hydro power plant in Warioi Village – Illuminating villages in Papua
6 September 2010 - Almost all of the villages in remote areas of Papua Province, which includes islands, mountains and swamps, have difficulties in getting electricity because of their difficult location and geographical conditions. The power supply from the government-owned power company cannot reach these villages. To have power supply in their village is a dream for most of the village communities. But the dream became true for the people of Worioi village. Worioi is a village at Poom sub-district, Yapen, Papua. Worioi village can be reached by boat. It takes 2 hours from Biak city to Worioi, using a 400 HP speedboat. Worioi is located in the coastal area of Yapen, and is endowed with many rivers and waterfalls.

Women learning to cook and sew, home industries soaring in Papua’s Timika
6 September 2010 - El Gracia, one of the UNDP partners in Timika, has conducted capacity building to develop the skills of housewife groups in food processing and sewing. El Gracia is targeting women groups and is currently implementing four activities, improving sewing skills, food processing, basic health and reproductive health, and domestic violence prevention. El Gracia works in the sub-district of Kuala Kencana and covers 6 villages with a total population of 19,913.

Abua Bolakme community fish farming – boosting local economy through aquaculture
6 September 2010 - Bolakme sub-district is one of 13 sub-districts in Jayawijaya District Bolakme is located 45 km from Wamena, the capital city of Jayawijaya District. The total land area of Bolakme is 1,266 km2 and has 15,359 inhabitants – approximately 4,388 households. UNDP through its local partner, in partnership with local government is assisting the community to generate income through freshwater aquaculture activity.

Cambodia seeks to learn from Indonesia’s success in decentralization
27 August 2010 - Indonesia’s success in executing decentralization has drawn interest from Cambodia. The neighboring country, which is undergoing similar reform process, seeks to learn the experiences and the process from Indonesia. Therefore, with the facilitation from UNDP Indonesia, the National Committee for Democratic Development (NCDD) of Cambodia paid a study visit to Jakarta and Kupang.

Provincial Strengthening: Building Synergy, Improving the Quality of Good Governance
2 August 2010 - Since decentralization was initiated several years ago, the discourse is heavily focused on the role and functions of district governments. At the same time, no one is taking the role to coordinate, monitor, and evaluate the regional development. As a respond to that challenge, UNDP in collaboration with Bappenas and MoHA and fully supported by Decentralization Support Facility (DSF) designed a program to strengthen the status, roles, authorities, and responsibilities of provincial government. This program, Provincial Governance Strengthening Programme (PGSP) is launched today.
