Cartoonists from Asia-Pacific win awards on Earth Day from the UN and Government of France
Asia-Pacific cartoons depicting the effects of climate change on children, Chinese cities, the Pacific Islands and mangrove forests won a regional contest sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of France. Cartoonists from Bangladesh, China, India, Lao PDR, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines have been recognized on this year’s Earth Day for their original artwork depicting climate change and human development in Asia-Pacific countries.

Indonesian President Yudhoyono, UN development chief meet on forests
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono met with United Nations Development Programme Administrator Helen Clark in Jakarta Thursday where they discussed Indonesia’s pioneering efforts to prevent deforestation and degradation as part of a UN initiative. They also discussed the strong partnership between Indonesia and UNDP and the importance of sharing globally Indonesia’s development experiences in many areas, including dramatic progress on the MDGs, particularly in the areas of education and health, its important work on disaster recovery, and Indonesia’s democratic transformation.

Helen Clark visits REDD+ pilot initiative in Indonesia
On the first day of her three-day trip to Indonesia, UNDP chief Helen Clark traveled to Central Kalimantan, where she took a boat through parts of the province to see first-hand the forest cover and peat lands which face a real threat of deforestation. She met with local officials to discuss their plans for REDD+ pilot initiatives -- Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation which also include the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.

Two grassroots initiatives from Indonesia recognized by United Nations for efforts to reduce poverty by conserving biodiversity
The Equator Initiative, a United Nations-led partnership that supports local and indigenous efforts in biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation, recently announced the twenty-five winners of the Equator Prize 2010 following an extensive technical review process. Among the winners were Yayasan Mitra Tani Mandiri and Komunitas Nelayan Tomia from Indonesia.

American Actress and UN Youth Champion Monique Coleman visited Indonesia on 21-22 February as part of a world tour to promote the International Year of Youth. Ms. Coleman aims to raise awareness on youth issues, encourage young people to use their ability to foster progress in their communities, and urge the international community to take responsibility on youth issues.

UNICEF, UNFPA, and UNDP Indonesia action plans launched
The Country Programme Action Plans (CPAP) of the Government of Indonesia (GoI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for 2011-2015 were signed today at Bappenas. The joint signing formalises the five-year agreements between the government and the three UN organisations to pursue development initiatives in line with national needs and priorities.
