Writing this introduction comes at a significant time for me, as I begin my role as UNDP Indonesia Resident Representative. Indonesia is a land of contrasts, challenges and changing needs, and I accept this new position with great enthusiasm. I look forward to helping UNDP Indonesia continue the work it has carried out with the Government for more than three decades in alleviating poverty and promoting human development.

I’m encouraged by the level of commitment from UNDP Indonesia and its partners, and by their continued achievements. We still have a lot of work to do. Although Indonesia has just graduated to middle-income country status, 40 percent of its population still lives below the national poverty line. These people aspire to better lives.

We have also passed the halfway point for achieving the global Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). With the 2015 target date fast approaching, we must maintain all efforts to meet these goals. The Government of Indonesia has committed to achieving the MDGs, and we will ensure that our development assistance is such that we help Indonesia fulfill this commitment. Therefore, ongoing hard work and cooperation with all parties, including civil society, private sector and the donor community, is vital.

Working closely with these partners, UNDP Indonesia will continue to make democracy work for the country’s people; protect the environment; provide support for crisis prevention, recovery and disaster response; and promote policy options for achieving the MDGs. In doing this work, we will continue to be a link between the Government, civil society and donors, and help develop appropriate responses and solutions.
